High-pressure die casting foundry – equipment and work organization
A high-pressure die casting foundry is more than a casting machine. Consistent casting quality depends on the entire work cell: the metal furnace, the machine with its die, temperature control, spraying, casting removal and trimming, and in the background the toolroom that designs and maintains the dies. Below we describe what such a cell consists of and what determines production quality.
High-pressure die casting foundry equipment
| Element | Role in the process |
|---|---|
| melting and holding furnace | keeps the alloy at a constant, controlled temperature |
| metal dosing | a ladle or dosing unit measures out a portion of metal into the shot sleeve |
| cold-chamber machine | closes the die and forces the metal into the cavity with a plunger; it is selected for the clamping force required by the given casting |
| tool steel die | reproduces the shape of the casting; it has cooling channels, cores and ejector pins |
| die temperature control | maintains a constant die temperature, on which cavity filling and casting dimensions depend |
| die spraying | applies the release agent and cools the die surface between cycles |
| manipulator or robot | removes the casting from the open die |
| trimming | removes the gating system and overflows – in a trim press with a trimming die or mechanically |
| quality | dimensional measurements, structure and strength testing |
How the casting cycle works
- The die closes and a portion of molten aluminum is poured into the shot sleeve.
- The plunger forces the metal into the die cavity – first slowly, then at high speed – and after filling it maintains high intensification pressure.
- The metal solidifies in the cooled die, then the die opens and the ejector pins release the casting.
- The manipulator removes the casting, and the die surface is sprayed before the next cycle.
- The casting goes to trimming, then on to machining and inspection.
We describe the injection, pressure and temperature phases of the process in the text aluminum die casting.
What determines quality
- stable process parameters: metal and die temperature, plunger speed, intensification pressure and cycle time,
- clean metal with a controlled composition,
- a well-designed, regularly refurbished die,
- automation that limits random variation between cycles,
- traceability – the ability to identify the production parameters of a specific batch or part.
Our high-pressure die casting foundry
We cast aluminum on an automated line with control of temperature, pressure and cycle time and real-time parameter monitoring, and a traceability system lets us identify the production parameters of a specific part. We select shot sleeves of different capacities to suit the project. We design dies in CAD/CAM with alloy flow simulation, make them from tool steel on our own CNC machines, and cool and refurbish them. Alloys, tolerances and production run ranges are described on the page high-pressure die casting – our offer.
In short: A high-pressure die casting foundry is a production cell made up of a furnace, metal dosing, a cold-chamber machine with a die, temperature control, die spraying, casting extraction and trimming, and a toolroom. Quality depends on stable process parameters, clean metal, die condition, automation and traceability.
