5 key benefits of aluminum casting for your business

Aluminum castings replace steel and cast iron parts in many designs. Below are the five most important benefits of aluminum casting, along with the limitations worth keeping in mind.

1. Light weight and strength

The density of aluminum is about 2.7 g/cm³ – roughly one-third that of steel and cast iron. Aluminum casting alloys also offer good strength, which can be increased further by heat treatment in many alloys. That is why aluminum castings are used where low weight matters: in vehicles, machinery and portable equipment.

2. Corrosion resistance

In air, aluminum forms a thin, tight oxide layer that protects it from corrosion. In humid or salty environments, resistance depends on the alloy – copper-free alloys, such as those in the AlSi and AlMg groups, perform better – and castings can be additionally protected with a powder coating.

3. Good thermal and electrical conductivity

Aluminum conducts heat and electricity well, which is why it is used to cast heat sinks, electronic enclosures and electrical equipment components. The conductivity of a casting depends on the alloy – the fewer alloying additions, the higher it is.

4. Good castability and easy machining

Aluminum casting alloys, especially silumins (AlSi), have good castability, so they fill complex molds, and the castings machine easily. Casting makes it possible to produce both small, precise parts and large structural components – in sand molds, permanent molds or by high-pressure die casting.

5. Sustainability and recycling

Aluminum can be remelted repeatedly, and remelting uses only a small fraction of the energy required to produce primary aluminum. Castings made from secondary alloys have a much smaller carbon footprint than products made from primary aluminum, and lighter vehicle and machine parts reduce energy consumption in service.

Limitations to keep in mind

Aluminum has lower stiffness and hardness than steel, and its strength drops at elevated temperatures. For this reason, replacing a steel part with an aluminum one usually requires a design change – for example, thicker walls or added ribs.

Summary

Light weight, corrosion resistance, good conductivity, castability, ease of machining and recyclability make aluminum castings cost-effective in many industries. You can read more about the properties on the page aluminum castings – properties. Our foundry produces permanent mold, sand and high-pressure die castings with CNC machining – see production offer.
