Metal Casting: High-Pressure Die Casting, Permanent Mold Casting and Sand Casting

In this category we collect practical knowledge about the three pillars of modern casting: high-pressure die casting, permanent mold (gravity die) casting and sand casting. Here you will find DFM guides, technology comparisons, case studies and checklists that make it easier to choose the right process for prototypes and series production. We cover materials (aluminum, ZnAl, brass, bronze), the design of permanent molds and sand molds, and the effect of part geometry on dimensional tolerances, porosity and surface roughness. You will learn how to optimize unit cost, lead time and quality through DFM principles, metal flow simulation and integration with CNC machining. We show typical defects and how to eliminate them (e.g. in die castings), criteria for choosing between permanent mold and sand casting, and surface finishing processes: polishing, grinding, anodizing and powder coating. We place particular emphasis on quality control and non-destructive testing (NDT), from X-ray to 3D scanning, and on complete supply chains: from 3D/CAD design and core making, through pouring, to final machining and inspection. If you want to make an informed choice between sand casting, permanent mold casting and high-pressure die casting, this category will give you concrete, technical guidance.

The blog is written by the Poznań Foundry team

Poznań Foundry is a brand of Adjatech Metalworking Sp. z o.o., a family-owned non-ferrous foundry in Poznań. The Brukwicki family has been in foundry pattern making since 1950. We cast aluminum alloys in permanent molds, in sand molds and by high-pressure die casting; we machine the castings on CNC machines and powder coat them. We operate under ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 management systems (TÜV Rheinland Polska certificates).
