Aluminum Casting
An aluminum casting is a part made by pouring molten aluminum alloy into a mold. It combines low weight with good strength and corrosion resistance, and even a complex shape – with ribs, holes and channels – is produced in a single process, often without welding or assembly from multiple parts.
Examples of aluminum castings
- Housings – of electric motors, gearboxes, pumps, electronic devices and lighting fixtures.
- Housings and covers – of machines, drive units and industrial equipment.
- Brackets, holders and fastening elements – lightweight structural parts for vehicles and machinery.
- Heat sinks and cooling components – aluminum conducts heat well.
- Wheels, bushings and drive components – after machining of the working surfaces.
- Components of agricultural machinery, furniture and fittings – where corrosion resistance and appearance matter.
Examples of castings we have produced are shown in gallery, and the industries we work for – on the page sectors.
When an aluminum casting is the right choice
- the part has a complex shape that is difficult or expensive to make from solid material,
- weight matters – aluminum is almost three times lighter than steel,
- the part operates in moisture or outdoors and must not corrode,
- heat dissipation is required,
- the order covers a series – from a few dozen to many thousands of pieces.
A casting is not always the best solution. Large, flat and thin parts are easier to make from sheet metal, and parts with the highest strength requirements – for example by forging.
Casting or machining from solid material
| Feature | Casting + machining of functional surfaces | Machining from solid material |
|---|---|---|
| tooling | pattern or mold | none |
| material consumption | low – shape close to the finished part | high – most of the material ends up as chips |
| unit cost in a series | low | high for complex shapes |
| best for | series production and complex shapes | single pieces and simple shapes |
In practice, the two methods are most often combined: casting provides the shape, while CNC machining provides the accuracy of fits, threads and sealing surfaces.
Aluminum castings from our foundry
We produce permanent mold castings weighing 0.1 to 50 kg, sand castings from 1 to 100 kg, and high-pressure die castings in series of up to 100,000 pieces per year. We machine castings on our own CNC machines and, on request, powder coat them. A drawing or 3D model is all we need for a quote – we will also advise which technology to choose.
In short: aluminum is used to cast housings, bodies, covers, brackets, heat sinks and drive components. Casting works well for complex shapes, series production, and wherever low weight and corrosion resistance matter.
